Just in time for Spring, the First Street Green Art Park has turned over a new batch of cool and colorful murals, such as this one by Brooklyn-based multi-media artist Grace Lang, AKA Grooseling. We were just arriving for a fun press event at The Pennsy Food Hall in Penn Plaza, just out front of Madison Square Garden, when I spotted this fantastic, towering public art work by Jonathan Borofsky. Entitled Human Structures, the sculpture sits where Roy Lichtenstein’s Brushstroke Group sculpture previously stood. Human Structures closely resembles a tower of colorful, interlocking paper dolls. What we like best about artist Will Ryman is the fact that all of his projects look completely different to each other. Whether it is sculptures of Giant Roses, a big Bird made of nails, or a Golden scale replica of the Log Cabin where Abraham Lincoln was born, it is always fun to see what he is going to do next.
Right now, Paul Kasmin Gallery’s West 27th Street space is hosting Two Rooms, a solo exhibition featuring two of Ryman’s new sculptural installations. The Situation Room (2012–2014) is a life-size installation based on the iconic photograph that captured members of the Obama administration and U.S. military leaders watching in real time the Navy SEAL raid on Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011. Geoffrey and I were walking north on Avenue A after having brunch at Yuca Bar when I noticed this lady walking directly in front of me wearing an eyeball print skirt! OMG! I tried to snap her photo while we were waiting at the light — because, Eyeball Skirt — but then the light changed and she took off. I got this shot while she sped away from me thanks to my zoom lens! Then, when she stopped to walk into a bar, I got the shot below.
