It seems there’s always something new to discover in and around Freeman Alley, the Lower East Side’s ever-changing street art mecca. On the day after the Fourth of July, with the summer heat still hanging over the city, I spotted this oversized Pink Buddha mural on Rivington Street, just a few steps from the alley itself. Despite looking carefully, I couldn’t find an artist’s tag, so perhaps one of my readers can chime in.

Before Andy Warhol became the king of Pop Art, he made his living as one of New York City’s most sought-after commercial illustrators. In the 1950s, his whimsical shoe drawings became a signature of his early career, appearing in advertisements and promotional materials for the fashionable department store Bonwit Teller, as well as in his own self-published artist books.

Back in the summer of 2016, my sister and I embarked on a Baltic capitals cruise that departed from Copenhagen, Denmark. We spent three wonderful days exploring the city before setting sail and another day after returning, soaking in its rich history, magnificent castles, and, of course, its world-famous Danish design.

While looking through photos from that trip recently, I came across a shot of this adorable little Pink Fiat waiting patiently in traffic.

When most people think of Andy Warhol, they probably picture Campbell’s Soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles, or his instantly recognizable celebrity portraits. Among those famous faces, none is more iconic than Marilyn Monroe. It actually surprised me to realize that this vibrant pink version of Marilyn, part of the Museum of Modern Art’s collection in NYC, had never made an appearance as a Pink Thing of the Day. That oversight ends now!

Who says security has to be boring? Spotted hanging among a sea of ordinary hardware, this Pink Bicycle Lock demanded its own photo. Coiled up like a giant piece of candy, the brightly-colored lock turns a practical necessity into an unexpectedly cheerful accessory. If Barbie rode a bicycle around the city, I’m pretty sure this would be her lock of choice.

I believed that everyday objects deserve a little personality, and this vivid pink number proves that even something as mundane as protecting your bike can have style. Whether it’s guarding a bicycle or simply brightening up a hardware display, this pretty-in-pink protector earns its place as this week’s Pink Thing of the Day.
