While browsing in the perfume section at Nordstrom recently, I spotted something that immediately caught my attention. The two creative minds of designer Marc Jacobs and Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami have joined forces for Daisy Murakami, giving Jacobs’ familiar Daisyfragrance a decidedly Murakami makeover. It seems there’s always something new to discover in and around Freeman Alley, the Lower East Side’s ever-changing street art mecca. On the day after the Fourth of July, with the summer heat still hanging over the city, I spotted this oversized Pink Buddha mural on Rivington Street, just a few steps from the alley itself. If this Giant Pink Banana looks familiar, it might be because you’ve seen one like it offered as a prize for winning one of the games at Luna Park in Coney Island. I was nowhere near Coney, however when I saw this happy teenager, waiting to board the elevator from the 7 Train platform at 42nd Street with the banana, which is clearly as tall as he is, in tow. Live in NYC long enough and eventually you’ll see everything.
