DVD Review: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead, a Documentary About The Damned

The Damned Documentary

Coming of age in the late 1970s, I was in the right place at the right time to enjoy the character-shaping birth of British Punk Rock,  as well as having a ground zero experience of the Southern California Punk Rock movement, which was equally legendary.

It was a great time to be a teenage music lover! It was also a blessing that driving up to LA to see a punk band was not always necessary, because Orange County had its own live music venue that booked both US and UK-based acts; a dive-y little joint, hidden away in an industrial neighborhood of Costa Mesa, which was called The Cuckoo’s Nest. It was at The Cuckoo’s Nest in 1979 that I first saw The Damned live, on tour in support of what is arguably still their best and most popular album, Machine Gun Etiquette.

Here’s a Must See Art exhibit that features new works by two New York-based artists — Logan Hicks and Beau Stanton — who should be Art World Superstars any second now.  Curated by Lori Zimmer and Natalie Kates,  Calm Before the Storm, the two person show which opened this past Saturday at the Highline Loft, takes inspiration from nautical superstition, flood myths, classical paintings, life changing events and the modern issue of rising seas. Confession: After hearing the names Kathleen Hanna, Bikini Kill and Riot Grrrl off and on for two decades, I really didn’t know anything about Hanna, her music or the highly influential feminist movement she co-founded until I watched Director Sini Anderson’s excellent documentary, The Punk Singer: A Film About Kathleen Hanna, on DVD last night. In fact, I admit that for many years I had confused Kathleen Hanna with Kristen Hersh of Throwing Muses, which is just embarrassing.

This colorful and fun mural by Peelander-Yellow of Peelander-Z, the Japanese Action Comic Punk Band based in NYC is located on East 2nd Street, between 2nd Avenue and Bowery. It’s evidently been up since February, but the heinous weather has kept me from doing much exploring, so I just spotted it for the first time this past weekend, when the temps soared into the high 60s! Woo! This looks like some kind of Space Pig, to me. Space Pig!

If you’re a fan of costume and couture exhibits, and you thought that 2011’s Alexander McQueen exhibit, Savage Beauty (which dominated traffic at The Met for close to a year) was amazing, then your head will definitely explode when you see the Brooklyn Museum’s must-see extravaganza,The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. We arrived at the Brooklyn Museum not really knowing what to expect, and were so blown away by this expansive and wildly impressive exhibit that you can count on the 100 or so photographs I snapped during yesterday’s visit being spread out over several blog posts.
