Artist and designer Beau McCall uses buttons to tell stories “about African-American life, love and experience,” noting “buttons are universal. There are those that express class differences, political views, and cultural issues.” His jacket, The Revolution (1995) communicates black American Afrocentricity through the colors of the pan African flag.

Eye On Design: Selly Raby Kane, Yoff Dress

Named after a Laboue village in northern Dakar, this Yoff dress is inspired by the energy and urban environment of the city. Senegalese designer Selly Raby Kane created her Autumn/Winter 2017 collection, which includes the Yoff Dress, as a celebration of Dakar and its “transgressive, creative processes, and cross -disciplinary vision,” The collection is named for the imagined location of 17 Rue Jules Ferry.

Christopher John Rogers (b. 1994)  created his eponymous Brooklyn-based brand in 2016, designing elegant pieces for the effortlessly chic individual. The designer draws inspiration from a variety of sources, from the vintage atmosphere of built spaces of the mid-to-late 20th century to modern artists, including John Chamberlain and David Hammons.

Modern Art Monday Presents: Untitled (Snag) By Cy Gavin

Cy Gavin’s recent paintings, such as Untitled (Snag) from 2022,  conjure landscapes and the natural world. His imagery frequently starts from his observations of his immediate surroundings, but his selections also carry metaphorical weight. Recent paintings have depicted cosmic phenomena, a failing human-made dam patched by beavers, native and invasive flora, and a forest’s regrowth in the wake of earth disturbances such as construction activities.
