Suicide By Modernism By Mark Kostabi (2005/2011) Photo By Geoffrey Dicker
The Adam Baumgold Gallery on New York’s Upper East Side is currently hosting a group show called Art on Art, in which each artist references other artists or artworks in his or her own creation. This makes for a diverse collection full of humorous touches that inspired a lot of lively conversation at last night’s opening. My favorite painting in the exhibit is Mark Kostabi’s Suicide by Modernism, which has the artist’s unmistakable imprint while managing to reference nearly a dozen of his famous peers. There are times when it’s very easy for me to speak about and describe the art I’ve seen, and other times when I feel it’s best to just let the art do the talking. The latter is how I feel after seeing David Altmejd’s latest exhibit, currently at the Andrea Rosen Gallery in Chelsea. Yesterday was the first “no coat required” day to grace NYC weather in about 2 months, so I took advantage of the pleasant outsider conditions to venture across town to a few galleries on West 23rd Street. While I had missed the opening party on Thursday, I wanted to make sure I saw the Wanderlust exhibit currently on view at Margaret Thatcher Projects. You can see by these pictures that it was worth trip. Continue reading Margaret Thatcher Projects Gallery Presents Venske & Spänle’s Wanderlust→
Geoffrey follows the Twitter feed of performance artist Nate Hill. As part of his “Best Art Show 2011″ project, Nate is known for Tweeting a specific location, at which he will show up at a predetermined time and share his latest inspired performance with the unsuspecting people of NYC. Gonzo! As a prelude to our semi-regular Thursday night art crawl, Geoffrey suggested that we meet up at the corner of Barclay and Broadway, just outside City Hall Park, at 5:30 PM, where Nate would show up as “Punch Me Panda.” Neither one of us had any idea what this meant, but we agreed it would be a fun surprise.
