Pink Thing of The Day: Chris Ahalt’s Blown Glass Balloon Animals

Glass Hippos and Elephant
All Photos By Gail

While I was at this year’s Architectural Digest Design Show, I saw and fell in love with so many cool and beautiful things, but never really had the time to distill the day’s many photos into a proper wrap up of the event as a whole. Fortunately, it’s never too late to find a way to feature some of a my favorite photos from the show; in this case, several items I saw in the booth hosted by Chesterfield Gallery, who specialize in fine glass art.

Pink Shiny Hippo
Hangry

Hangry is a hand-blown glass hippopotamus affixed to a copper wire with a steel base, and it’s part of American glass artist Chris Ahalt’s balloon animal series.

Pink Glass Elephant

There is a cool Pink Elephant also.

Light Pink Hippo

And another Pink Hippo, who seems less “hangry.”

Josiah McElheny Paintings at Andrea Rosen Gallery

Crystalline Prism Painting

To better convey what these paintings are all about, I’ve borrowed some text taken from the exhibit’s official press release.

Modern Art Monday Presents: Marcel Duchamp’s To Be Looked at (from the Other Side of the Glass) with One Eye, Close to, for Almost an Hour

Inscribed on a strip of metal glued across the approximate center of this work are the words of its title, suggesting that viewers look through the lens that Duchamp mounted between two panes of glass and haloed in concentric circles. The title of this work, which Duchamp said he “intended to sound like an oculist’s prescription,” tells the viewer exactly how to look at it. But peering through the convex lens embedded in the work’s glass “for almost an hour” would have a hallucinatory effect, the view being dwarfed, flipped, and otherwise distorted.

Katherine Gray’s A Rainbow Like You

A Rainbow Like You
All Photos By Gail

No matter how confident I ever am that I know most of the street level galleries in Chelsea, today I stopped it to the Heller Gallery on Tenth Avenue and asked how long they’d been open, since this was the first time I’d noticed them. The answer, which was quite unexpected, is that they’ve been at that location almost two years! How have I missed that? I have a few ideas. Continue reading Katherine Gray’s A Rainbow Like You
