This bitchen Skull Garden Chair is part of an art exhibit that you can see at the French Cultural Center if you’re going to be in Milan, Italy between the dates of April 12-17, 2011.
The coolest thing about the far-reaching field of modern design is that you just never know what amazing idea an inspired designer might come up with. Take, for example, Swedish designer Alexander Lervik’s conceptual development of the light bar – a light installation called Dimensions – on display at this year’s Stockholm Furniture Fair. The light bar sculpture is made up of 1728 heads, arranged in 12 rows x 12 rows of posts, each post containing 12 heads alternating male and female, which are arranged to form a cube-like structure. Dimensions was originally created for insurance company Skandia, with the heads meant to symbolize the employees of the company. Wow, I love this thing! This artistically cool table by designer Yuka Izutsu is made up of fluorescent pink acrylic in a faux woodgrain pattern with various small orb-shaped adornments. It’s almost more of a sculpture /piece of art than functional furniture, but it sure would make a bold statement as an addition to any interior. More pictures can be seen at This Link.
You’ll find all kinds of whimsical, fun furniture over at design website Jellio, like this really cool Ice Cream Sandwich Bench that would look super cute in a kid’s room, or even make a statement among more traditional contemporary furniture in an adult bedroom or den. Constructed of solid foam throughout, the chocolate wafer cushions are covered in dark brown canvas, while the vanilla ice cream center is covered in cream-colored vinyl, with wooden legs. Dimensions: 20″W x 48″L x 18″H. Sells for just $1500 plus shipping. See the link above for purchasing details. Sweet!
This is a Lamp Illuminated Philippe Starck Bubble Chair By Tobias Wong
Designer and fine contemporary artist, Tobias Wong, passed away on May 30th from an apparent suicide, but for some reason I didn’t hear about his death until today. Tobias Wong was known for outrageous send ups of luxury goods and humorous appropriation of work by other designers or businesses – such as McDonald’s Restaurants – which blurred the line between conceptual art and design. He first gained the attention of the design press in 2001 when he turned a Philippe Starck Bubble Club chair into the lamp pictured above.
