Summer weather has finally come to NYC and – after hiding in your apartment for six months – it’s the perfect time to get outdoors on the weekends, explore the city, and even get to the outer boroughs, which I hardly ever do. This past Saturday, Geoffrey and I went exploring in the far off land of Queens to check out the Socrates Sculpture Park and its current exhibit, Do it Outside! Woo!

Will Ryman’s Bird at the Flatiron Plaza

Bird (2012), is a 12-foot high, 12-foot wide, and 14-foot long sculpture, made with fifty-five hundred actual and fabricated nails in the shape of a bird. The work weighs five tons, and rests upon a nest of ninety thousand nails. Through this sculpture, Ryman changes the meaning of the nail, which is traditionally used to connect materials and build structures. By dramatically altering its scale and using it in excessive quantities, Ryman blurs the relationship between abstraction and realism. As the viewer rotates around the sculpture, Bird transitions from the shape of a bird to a nonrepresentational sculpture.

Bird will be on Display through April 21st, 2013

Pink Thing of The Day: Pink Umbrellas Installation

Pink Umbrellas

This Installation of 400 suspended Pink Umbrellas, meant to raise awareness of breast cancer, was hung in a canopy over pedestrians’ heads in downtown Sofia, Bulgaria, in October 2012.

Big Kastenmann Sculpture By Erwin Wurm

Austrian artist Erwin Wurm’s latest sculpture is titled Big Kastenmann, which translates to “big box man” in English. This 18-foot-tall sculpture of a headless businessman is made of cast-aluminum, partially covered in pink enamel paint. The figure wears a long suit jacket without pants. This 1.6 ton corporate sentry guards the area outside of the Standard Hotel in NYC’s Meat Packing District as part of its public art program, so take a trip to the High Line if you’d like to see it up close.
