The frame of André Dubreuil’s Spine Chair (1986) is constructed from five steel rods, each shaped by hand in a vice or jig and joined with visible welds. Lengths of flattened iron tubing — purchased flat and then formed in the workshop — are openly attached to the frame, with the marks of manufacture intentionally displayed rather than concealed. This emphasis on process reflects Dubreuil’s rejection of modernist ideals of seamless perfection in favor of material honesty and expressive construction.

In NYC, you will come across amazing discoveries every few feet if you just keep your eyes open. Man in The Moon-Inspired Iron Gate

Man in the Moon Gate

Check out this cool custom gate that caught my eye as I was walking around in Chelsea the other day! The whimsical design is based on the iconic image of the Man in the Moon (with a space capsule embedded through one eye) from the 1902 French adventure film, A Trip to the Moon.

Spotted on 21st Street between 8th and 9th Avenues in Chelsea, NYC.

Pair of Art Deco Gates from the Chanin Building

Designed by Rene Paul Chambellan (18931955) and fashioned from wrought iron and bronze, these gates from the entrance to the Chanin Building’s executive suite, are excellent examples of the important role that metalwork played in defining the art deco style of New York skyscrapers from about 1925 to 1940. The gates’ largely linear, radiating design created an industrially informed aesthetic that was part of the machine-age era.

Photographed in the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York City.
