In Memorium: Remembering The Bunny Museum of Altadena, California

Nestled in the heart of Altadena, California, the Bunny Museum stood as a whimsical sanctuary dedicated to the celebration of all things rabbit. A beloved institution, it wasn’t just a museum; it was a home, a labor of love, and a testament to the boundless joy that collecting and cherishing can bring. Tragically, this haven was reduced to ashes in the recent LA wildfires — specifically the Eaton Canyon Fire, which wiped out much of Altadena — leaving behind only memories of its unparalleled charm and the countless smiles it inspired. I was lucky to have visited this wonderful collection with my sister on Christmas Eve day while in California for the holidays. I can’t believe it’s gone.

In 1930, Paul Nash (18891946) traveled to the South of France, staying in a hotel by the sea. The image in Harbour and Room (193236) derives from a reflection of a ship in the large mirror which hung in front of his bed. The critic Herbert Read, admired Nash’s response to surrealism, writing “he has dared to transform the English tradition.” In 1936, Harbour and Room was included in both the International Surrealist Exhibition in London and Fantastic Art, Dada, and Surrealism in New York City.

Photographed in the Tate Modern Museum in London.
