The Brazilian mural artists – twin brothers – known as Os Gemeos have painted another one of their epic murals in the East Village on the south-facing facade of 26 Second Avenue at 1st Street, on the vacant lot that formerly housed one of the of rare gas stations that you never see in the city. Now that summer is here, a warm, sunny day is the perfect time to go on a Street Art Safari around the neighborhoods of Williamsburg and the adjacent Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Just take the L Train from Manhattan to either the Bedford Avenue or Lorimer Avenue stops and you’ve got an urban Wonderland that’s yours to freely explore. Recently, we spotted this colorful piece by Brazilian mural artist Eduardo Kobra on North Ninth Street just east of Bedford Avenue and instantly recognized it as an homage to one of the 1985, black-and-white portrait photo’s by Michael Halsband (see below), which captured Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol wearing Everlast shorts and boxing gloves. Brazilian sculptor Saint Clair Cemin has returned to Paul Kasmin for his third solo show at the gallery. Myth and Math finds a familiarity with Cemin’s minimalist approach while also delivering something new and unexpected. Check out the piece below:
What a cool idea to set this bronze “Octopus” sculpture section against mirrored surfaces, where the fractional piece (1/8th of the imagined whole) can be made to look complete and 3-D with assistance from the reflections. Just genius.
Love and Mathematics, 2014
Regarding the above piece, Love and Mathematics, Cemin explicitly combines the emotional and the rational, two seemingly contrasting concepts which he is able to jointly explore with his chosen artistic medium.
This one, Athina (2014) reminds me very much of an Umberto Boccione sculpture I saw at MOMA over the summer.
I don’t know why these sculptures remind me of expensive new foreign sports cars, but I think that should be considered a good thing.

When I was a teenager, there was a popular saying that “A Woman Needs a Man Like a Fish Needs a Bicycle” — which is still totally true, if a bit dated. I thought of that saying immediately when I saw the Fish-Bicycle hybrid sculpture, Peixe Com Auréola (Fish with Halo), at Anton Kern Gallery this past Friday, when I was there for the opening reception for new works by the Brazilian Artist called Marepe.
