Created in 1963, Wrapped Toy Horse is a small but telling early work by Christo and Jeanne-Claude that offers a glimpse into the origins of their now-iconic artistic language. Long before they wrapped bridges, coastlines, and monuments, the artists were experimenting with fabric and binding on an intimate, domestic scale.

The Meeting Place Statue, St. Pancras Station, London
The Meeting Place statue is a prominent feature in St. Pancras International Station in London. Created by sculptor Paul Day, it was unveiled in 2007 as part of the station’s extensive refurbishment. The bronze statue stands an impressive 9 meters (approximately 30 feet) tall. Depicting a man and woman embracing in a romantic farewell or reunion, symbolizing love and connection often associated with travel, it’s also know as the Lovers Statue. Modern Art Monday Presents: Rosalyn Drexler, Love and Violence
Rosalyn Drexler’s work often explores the dark backstories of postwar media culture and gender roles through imagery taken from mass-produced printed materials. For Love and Violence (1965), she enlarged a poster from the 1963 Hollywood film, Toys in the Attic, collaged it onto canvas and then painted over it within a flattened visual field. In this image, the movie’s main character, played by Dean Martin, embraces the female lead, Yvette Mimieux, with his hands at her chin. By setting the image against a red background, above cinematic scenes of brutality, Drexler highlights the threat implied by the male character’s seemingly intimate gesture. In the artist’s words, these popular images were “hidden but present, like a disturbing memory.”
Photographed in the Whitney Museum in NYC.
Louise Bourgeois, Suspension at Cheim and Read

Untitled Aluminum Coil Sculptures (2004). All Photos By Gail.
Cheim & Read has a must-see exhibit up through January by one of our favorite artists, renowned French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois. The sculptures in this exhibition, which, appropriately, is called Suspension, all hang from the ceiling, which was lots of fun to experience at the very crowded reception on October 30th. The show also includes a group of drawings from the 1940s, in which pendulous forms are delineated in black ink, the selection of works traces the theme of suspension throughout Bourgeois’s long career.

Andy Warhol Prom Outfits
Prom isn’t a rite of passage that I get sentimental about at all, in any way. I mean, Prom Shmom, who cares? In 20 years, one isolated night of awkward earnestness and drunken, hormone-fueled teenage boinking won’t mean anything anyway. What was I just talking about? Oh yes, Prom outfits. Don’t this young couple look really cute and much smarter/cooler than anyone else at their Prom could possibly look, all dressed up in a suit and dress that come together to form a likeness of my very favorite modern artist, Andy Warhol? Man, they look good. I hope they had fun at their stupid Prom.
