For me, a work of art is most effective when it creates a portal to an alternate reality into which the viewer can then immerse himself. A current exhibit which achieves this objective exquisitely is Andrépolis, the first major solo show by Portuguese artist André Saraiva – primarily known as the graffiti artist André – which opened at The Hole Gallery on Bowery this past Thursday.

It’s always fun to discover cool new shops, restaurants and places to hang out in your own neighborhood, which was the case this past Saturday evening when we were introduced to the Dorian Grey Gallery, a hip art space located just west of Avenue A on 9th Street. Although Dorian Grey has apparently been open for close to two years, we had no idea it was there until we attended the opening night reception for the gallery’s currently exhibit, Group Graff.

In an ambitious undertaking, the Keszler Gallery (with a Manhattan location on Madison Avenue) has acquired a number of original Banksy street works, some weighing several tons, for an exhibition in Southampton this month. Also included in the exhibition are a number of original prints. Many of the street works are sections of concrete walls gathered from around the globe, which are too heavy to exhibit in the gallery’s two Southampton locations. For this exhibit, the gallery has leased the town’s original power plant to house the art during this show. Being huge Banksy fans, Geoffrey and I made the trek out to Southampton this past Saturday for the opening reception and it turned out to be well worth the haul!
