Video Clip of The Week: IAMX, “Stardust”

Making his impressive debut in the Video Clip of The Week this Sunday is Chris Corner’s IAMX, with the Performance Art-oriented clip for the track “Stardust.” Featuring celebrity tattoo artist Kat Von D, this clip captures everything that makes the gothic/industrial scene so mesmerizing, while managing to keep this much-fetishized genre (which arguably, saw its commercial peak in the late 90s) fresh and intriguing. Mostly, it reminds me of my club days, when NYC venues like The Bank and Limelight were the places to go to dance yourself silly from midnight to dawn while communing with the other creatures of the night. The Bauhaus, an art and design school founded in Germany in 1919, trained it students to work with industrial producers to manufacture affordable household objects that exemplified efficient design. Bauhaus designers found inspiration in pure geometric forms, and American designers quickly adopted this aesthetic, radically paring objects down to basic shapes that were easy to fabricate mechanically.

This Vanity (1928) stands as a harbinger in the evolution of an American modern style. Norman Bel Geddes (1893 -1988) conceived of it only a year after founding the first industrial design firm in the United States. His prior experience on theater and film sets lent a dramatic flair to his consumer products, including  this dressing table and mirror, made of enameled and chrome-plated steel, which was part of a larger suite of metal bedroom furniture.
