Just mention the name Milford Plaza to anyone who’s lived in New York City for a length of time (or ever watched an original cast episode of Saturday Night Live) and they’ll likely offer an enthusiastic and nostalgia-tinged memory of that hotel’s Iconic TV Commercial featuring the popular tune “The Lullaby of Broadway.” I know this, because that is exactly what happened to me this past week when I started telling friends about my visit to the new Row Hotel, formerly the Milford Plaza, which reopened on March 1st following a years-long renovation to the tune of $140 million dollars. To call the transformation wildly impressive is an understatement.
This comfy-looking upholstered chair, which bears the likeness of Hello Kitty, is currently displayed in the front window of the Hello Kitty / Sanrio Store in Times Square, on 42nd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. If you look, not even that closely, you can see a reflection of the McDonalds just across the street.
When you’re as dedicated of a Foodie as me, Celebrity Chefs are the new Rock Stars — and from Eric Ripert and Anthony Bourdain to Jonathan Waxman and Rocco Dispirito, I have met many of the best. But no previous personal collision with culinary genius has matched the heights of squee-worthiness attained by my recent chance meeting with former Top Chef contestant and all around fabulous uber Hottie, Fabio Viviani! I love him! Fabio happened to be shilling for Bertolli Olive Oil at last week’s Editor Showcase at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, and he was just as charming and charismatic in person as he is on TV. Michael Anderson, the 45-year-old legendary NYC collage artist and White Hot Magazine art world photographer who is noted for designing the graffiti sticker lobby at the Ace Hotel, and the Eco-Friendly Times Square billboard for Target was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan on Saturday after having fallen off a building, breaking his back.
