If I am ever asked to name my three favorite pastimes (which really is not often) I will respond as follows:

I like to Eat
I like to Look at Art
and
I like to Watch TV

You can see that my love of Art is way up there, ranking just behind my love of sustenance, TV and also (not mentioned previously) sleeping. Art Fairs are a terrific way to get a huge and diverse art fix in one place and my favorite is the twice-annual Affordable Art Fair (AAF), which I have been highlighting and photo-recapping since 2015! I can’t believe how much I rule.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love Pigs. The above photo shows just a small section of a wall sculpture called Piggies #69 from artist Seunghwui-Koo, which I spotted in the both for Paris-based Singulart Gallery at the recent Affordable Art Fair. According to the artist, the little pig figurines are symbolic of all people, with the bright colors and tiny patterns on each representing the many different kinds of people. Florencio Lennox Campello is a prolific American artist, critic and blogger. I’ve noticed his work at the NY edition of the Affordable Art Fair since it returned post-Covid, where he exhibits unique monochromatic works painted on shards of pottery. At the most recent fair, held in September, I was completely charmed by this fun depiction of President Barack Obama as “the Batman.”  I’m sure it sold right away.

Surreal‘ is the word I would use to describe being in attendance at the absolutely packed Spring 2022 edition of the Affordable Art Fair, which took place in late March, but which I am just now getting around to telling you about, because things are surreal all over. Just like in the Before Times, the fair was crazy crowded — like Covid never happened. No one checked vax cards at the door and masks were optional (read: nonexistent). Is that good or bad? I don’t know anymore. All I can say is that the entire time I was inside the Metropolitan Pavilion was like being transported inside Mr. Peabody’s Wayback Machine. That said, let’s check out some of my favorite art from the  show, much of which is definitely surreal!

The Pervasive Influence of David Bowie in Art and Pop Culture

Bowie’s Eyes By Elena Lobanowa (All Photos By Gail)

For more years than I can recall, I’ve been photo-documenting the proliferation of David Bowie’s likeness on assorted things ranging from art and street art, to holiday ornaments, toys, books, mugs, magnets, what have you. With a few exceptions, most of these photos never make it into a blog post: I just like to collect them. Because, David Bowie. After recently spotting two pieces of Bowie-inspired street art on the same block in Greenpoint, I finally decided to load them all into one big Bowie extravaganza. Please enjoy!
