Flowers often feature in Rodarte’s collections. In this dress (Spring 2007), the use of oversized silk roses in variegated shades of silk tulle make a bold and striking statement. For the spring 2019 collection, Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy commissioned hairstylist Odile Gilbert to make hair sculptures from fresh roses, which were widely acclaimed.

Photographed as Part of the Exhibit Ravishing: The Rose in Fashion, on View at The Museum at FIT Through November 28th, 2021.

Pink Thing of The Day: Pink Roses in the Snow

This rose bush grows in a planter bed out front of my apartment building, and it somehow manages to stay alive nearly all year long. This photo was taken in early December of 2017, and I can’t believe I got such a great shot of  these tiny Pink Blossoms, and one still-tight bud, covered in a light snowfall. The roses are actually taking a break right now as there’s at least two feet of accumulated snow in the bed, but this photo is a reminder that they’ll be back in the spring.

Fortunately, the design stores appear to have reopened, as I discovered quite by accident when I walked past Caligaris and was sucked in off the street after catching a glimpse of this beauty in the window.

Pink Thing of The Day: Pink Neon Roses

Wonderworld Space was an attraction that existed in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for a few months this past fall. Located in a big pink warehouse, Wonderworld was fitted with multiple, Instagram-able rooms, each housing a themed-fantasy scenario in which selfie-obsessed young ladies could stage impromptu photo shoots. Yawn City. In other words, it was a total waste of time for normal people like me to go there unless you could get in for $5 (regular admission price: $25), which we did. Because anything is worth $5. I got a few blog-worthy snaps out of the visit, so it was money well-spent. These Pink Neon Roses floating around the word Love were part of a room with different neon art on each of its four walls. I’m not sure how good selfies come out when taken in a room that is mostly dark, but I think this shot looks pretty cool without people in it.

Pink Thing of The Day: Pink “But First, Coffee” Neon Sign

I made the accidental discovery of Posh Pop Bakeshop when I was attracted to the But, First Coffee Pink Neon Sign affixed to its rear wall while waiting to enter a restaurant located across the street. Now that’s what I call effective visual marketing! If you look closely, you can see that the bakeshop walls are also covered in tiny, pink plastic roses, for a seductive pink-on-pink glow.
