During a heavy rainstorm in Norfolk, England in 1893, an odd assortment of fish fell out of the sky. Thousands of cod, pollack and halibut showered the north side of the city in a concentrated area roughly the size of three modest cottages. After a spotted codfish crashed through a kitchen widow and struck young Claire Hargreaves’ head, knocking her unconscious, a curious thing happened.

One would think that the International Beauty Show would have Googled the alternate meaning of its initials — “IBS” — prior to posting them on all of their branding, but maybe I’m the only one to whom it seemed a little funny. Thierry Mugler took his inspiration from comic-book heroines and science-fiction, from uniforms and medieval armor, from industrial design and futuristic vehicles. The aerodynamic and robot-style looks he invented are now iconic. At the frontiers of reality, his automotive bodywork-clad creatures and cyborgs foreshadow today’s transhumanist endeavors in which body parts can actually be replaced by man-made equivalents. Modern Art Monday Presents: Alexander Archipenko, The Ray
Alexander Archipenko (1887 – 1964) first conceived the form of The Ray (Vase Woman III, The Ray), an elongated, abstract figure of a woman, around 1918. He explored the figure numerous times in several variations and media, sometimes calling it Vase or Vase Woman and other times Ray, recognizing the flexibility of perception, as well as the relationship between animate and inanimate forms.

Modern Art Monday Presents: Edward Hopper, New York Movie
The only painting in which Edward Hopper depicts a cinema screen, New York Movie (1939) is one of the artist’s most compelling and spatially complex theater pictures. This work depicts three distinct features within the movie house: the screen, the moviegoers watching it, and the usher tasked with watching them. The space itself is an amalgam of hoppers on-site research from four New York theaters: the Globe, Palace, Republic, and Strand.
