Ross Bleckner’s Count No Count (1989) is one of a series of memento mori paintings that the artist began to make in the mid-1980s. The suggestion of flickering lights in the work serves as a reminder to viewers of their own mortality, and for Bleckner — an AIDS activist — of the many lives lost to the AIDS epidemic. Bleckner engages both the formal and metaphorical qualities of light, yielding a work that shifts between abstraction and symbolic representation.

The Museum of Ice Cream Comes to Los Angeles
Do you like Ice Cream? I sure do. If you live in LA and also love Ice Cream, I am giving you a Head’s Up right now that The Museum of Ice Cream is coming to Los Angeles, California from April 22nd to May 29th, and if you don’t buy your tickets well in advance of its opening (read: right fucking now), you, like me, will not be going!
The Museum of Ice Cream’s LA location will be ten times larger that the one last year in NYC (which I could not even score press comps to) and will feature ten imaginative ice cream-related installations such as a Banana Split comprised of ten thousand bananas, a Mint Grow House, a Melted Popsicle Jungle and more.
As of this writing, the run is already sold out through the end of April, but there is availability in May, with tickets available for random timed entries ranging from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM, each day, except, Tuesdays, when it is closed so that they can clean the swimming pool filled with fake candy sprinkles. Just Kidding, sort of, not really.
Buy Your Tickets for $29 (Adults 13 and up) and $18 (Children 12 and under, or Seniors 60 and up!) at This Link! Tickets include 2 curated ice cream tastings and surprise edible treats!
The Museum of Ice Cream Will be Located at 2018 E. 7th Place, LA CA 90021 from April 22nd to May 29th, 2017.
Cooking With Gail Presents: Amira Smoked Basmati Rice!
Do you like Rice? I sure do. I especially love fragrant, long grain Basmati Rice from India. India! Seriously, it is the most delicious rice. Maybe you have shied away from making Basmati Rice in your home due to the additional required preparatory steps — such as rinsing, and then soaking the rice prior to cooking — which can seem a bit daunting if you are used to the no fuss approach of throwing rice in a pan with some water, bringing it to a boil, and then forgetting about it for 40 minutes, which is a no-brainer. I understand how you feel. Continue reading Cooking With Gail Presents: Amira Smoked Basmati Rice!
Jubilee French Restaurant: C’est Si Bon!

Do you like French food? I sure do. Recently, I was invited to dine with a couple of friends at Jubilee, an authentic French eatery that’s just a short trip up First Avenue from my east village flat. Owned and operated by Eric Macaire, head chef Luc Holie (formerly of the late, great L’Absinthe) and his amicable wife Ilda (the couple hail from Montpelier and Paris, respectively), Jubilee is a neighborhood gem whose warmly decorated interior is elegant while remaining comfortable, cozy and charming. I felt welcome right away.
Ridiculous Super Bowl Party Dessert: The Snickers Cheeseball
Okay, I admit that the idea of a Snickers Cheeseball is kind of, well, gross, until you see what goes into it, and how super easy it is to make. And then, it gets kind of exciting don’t you think? Also, I bet it tastes delicious. If you end up making this for your Super Bowl party, or whatever, leave me a comment and tell me how it came out.
Thanks to Delish for the Tip!
