Eye On Design: 16th Century Latticino Glass Ewer

The designer of this Ewer has borrowed an elegant Islamic form from 14 century works of glass and metal work produced in Egypt and Syria. The pattern is Italian, an elegant filigree technique known as Lattcino, achieved by blowing the vessel with clear and white glass canes. The ewer was, however, likely made in northern Europe or France in a pervasive imitation of Italian glass call ‘in Venetian style.’

This distinctive Pink Flamingo Reverse Goblet (1992) by Fritz Dreisbach is part of larger collection of art glass goblets owned by the Museum of Arts and Design in Manhattan. The collection is displayed in a rather out of the way location, which is against the street-facing windows of a stairway alcove, which takes advantage of natural light enhancing the translucency of the glassware.

Luna Ikuta’s Distilled Essence at Descanso Gardens

Luna Ikuta is an artist and designer whose work draws from biology, material science, and media. Operating within multidisciplinary fields, her diverse portfolio emerges from alchemical processes, experimenting with both organic and industrial mediums. Her Distilled Essence (2023), a multi-sensory installation, showcases preserved transparent botanicals, planted within decanters and handblown glass vessels. Drawing inspiration from the Diphylleia Grayi – a flower with the unique phenomenon of turning transparent when wet – Ikuta pioneered a method to replicate this visual characteristic across a myriad of plant species.
