Alexander McQueen once declared, “Birds in flight fascinate me.” One of his favorite films was Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 thriller The Birds, which inspired his spring/summer 1995 collection, including this jacket. Made from orange wool twill, it features a swarm of swallows screen printed by Simon Ungless and Andrew Groves. Individual birds gradually materialize from the ominous black cloud of swallows at the exaggerated shoulders, swooping around the body of the jacket and increasing in size but decreasing number towards the hem.

Photographed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art as Part of the Exhibit Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.

Elsa Schiaparelli’s designs were characterized by their witty, Surrealist-inspired details. This black, wool marocain  jacket features an embroidered mosaic of mirrored paillettes in the shape of two lamb chops. It dates from Schiaparelli’s Circus collection, presented in February 1938, just after the opening of the influential international Surrealism Exhibition in Paris. The jacket belonged to the American model and actress, Ruth Ford.

Photographed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

One would think that the International Beauty Show would have Googled the alternate meaning of its initials — “IBS” — prior to posting them on all of their branding, but maybe I’m the only one to whom it seemed a little funny. Certainly this lovely show attendee, sporting a Hot Pink Blazer and electric blue tresses doesn’t seem to give a crap (see what I did there).
