Caryn Cast is a NYC-based artist renowned for her murals, chalk portraits, and illustrations. Her work often features whimsical portraits and animals engaged in human activities, bringing a playful and imaginative touch to urban spaces.
One of her new and notable works is the Pigeon Lady mural, installed at the subway entrance at Houston Street and East 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. This large-scale painting on paper — with its bright pink background — was adhered to the wall adjacent to the subway entrance, adding a vibrant and engaging piece of art to the city’s landscape. Sometimes, the only quality a song needs to make it into this column is that I like the way it sounds, and the way the video makes me feel. If you’ve ever tried to imagine what Echo and The Bunnymen’s “Killing Moon” would sound like reimagined as a country song, I suggest it might sound a lot like Neighbor Lady’s “Let It Bleed” — a minor chord masterpiece that captures and conveys a lifetime of memories in under four minutes. Allan D’Arcangelo’s portrait of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and her young daughter Caroline adopts the bold style of modern advertising, epitomized by the broad areas of bright, unmodulated color. The image trades on the Kennedy’s brand status and visual legibility: its sitters are recognizable merely by virtue of their signature hairstyles and clothing, as well as Jackie’s string of pearls. Made just months before President Kennedy’s assassination1963,  Madonna and Child’s take on an age-old religious theme is at once optimistic and disquieting. With their bright halos and featureless faces, Jackie and Caroline appear as contemporary icons and saviors even as they are reduced to mute images for public consumption.
If you haven’t been to Coney Island at least once this summer, you owe it to yourself to make the trip. Most residents of Manhattan who live, say, from midtown to the east village area, can make it from the door to the shore in under 90 minutes, depending on how the trains are running. And for half the ride, the trains run above ground, so that makes it a bit more interesting of a ride as well. Even if you are not a “Beach Person” (raises hand), and the rides at Luna Park make you barf (keeps hand raised) there is so much to see and do at Coney Island that all you need to have is an adventurous spirit, and maybe some sunblock. Pictured above, we see my lovely friend Ivy posing with a board game called The Crazy Cat Lady Game. Said game is yet another genius item we found at Greystone Gardens during Berkshires Adventure Weekend 2012. We do not know the exact rules of the game, but we are pretty sure that possession of at least a dozen cats is a prerequisite. Continue reading Yes, It Exists: The Crazy Cat Lady Game→
