If you have children at home who still believe in Santa Claus, then you may have an Elf on The Shelf who visits each holiday season and makes your kids feel paranoid. Known as Scout Elves, theses elves are distinguished from the rest of Santa’s Helpers by their distinctive red-and-white suit, white collar and pointy hat.

I don’t have kids myself but I get that, for families with rug rats, The Elf on the Shelf is a fun Christmas tradition, even if the point is to make your kids believe that the elves are spying on them (because of that whole Naughty or Nice List that Santa supposedly keeps). Is that effed up? Maybe a little bit. Then again, what does a happily-childless person like me know?

Now that Christmas is behind us for another year, Santa Claus is kicking back in his Causal Pinks. He looks like he’s slimmed down a bit as well. Go, Santa.

Video Clip of The Week: Straight No Chaser, “Text Me Merry Christmas” Featuring Kristen Bell

I figured it was about time I posted an “official” Christmas-Themed Video Clip of the Week, so that we all have time to enjoy it before Christmas has already come and gone — because, I swear, it gets here faster every year! This week’s clip is “Text Me Merry Christmas” by the a capella group Straight No Chaser, featuring the guest vocals of actress Kristen Bell. I loved her so much in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but she certainly has shown her range with her turn as Jeannie in Showtime’s House of Lies, and now I find out she can sing! I guess it was not really a secret, but I had no idea!

Anyway, not only is this animated video for “Text Me Merry Christmas” adorable as heck, but the song, with its super clever lyrics, is just fantastic and will stick in your head like a holiday ear worm! To create this fun music video that’s sure to become a modern Christmas classic, Straight No Chaser partnered with YouTube comedy-collective and branded content company JASH, and award-winning songwriters Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne) and David Javerbaum. Visually inspired by beloved Rankin-Bass Holiday specials like Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town, JASH collaborated with their animation partner, Toronto based Cuppa Coffee Studios to help create a music video in a similar style. High Fives All Around on this one! Enjoy!

2014’s First Art Joke: Jim Joe’s January 2014 at The Hole

A Glass of Water and A Lottery Ticket are Examples of Jim Joe’s “Art,” at the Hole (All Photos By Gail)

Jim Joe (real name and identity unknown) is a NYC tagger/street artist who writes his name, and an occasional saying, on buildings around the various NYC boroughs and, The Hole Gallery would have us believe, apparently wants to be taken seriously as an artist. OK, whatever. I like to keep an open mind about what constitutes “Art” in a contemporary sense, but this exhibit takes even the James Franco School of The Emperors New Clothes Phenomena to a new level of bullshit.
