Pink Thing of The Day: Pink Takochu!

Pink Takochus

Takochu are little plastic/acrylic Octopus toys manufactured by the Japanese company Pine.  They stack on top of each other and are incredibly cute. A little bit of research on the Google indicates that they’ve been around for about four years and no longer appear to be readily available to purchase except on eBay. Huge bummer.

I took the above photo during Geoffrey and my most recent visit to the Museum of Modern Art this past Saturday, at which time the artist who painted it, On Kawara, was still very much alive. And now, he’s dead, having passed away on July 10th, 2014 at his home in NYC, at the age of 81. He had a good, long life!

Read about the career and art of On Kawara in the Huffington Post’s excellent Obit, found at This Link.

Pink Thing of The Day: Kurage-Bo!

This little pink cutie is Kurage-Bo (translation: Jellyfish Boy), a main character in visual artist Takashi Murakmi’s directorial film debut, Jellyfish Eyes. The film mixes live action with cartoon animation and Kurage-Bo is one of the lead animated heroes of the film, which I saw at a screening a few weeks ago.

This colorful and fun mural by Peelander-Yellow of Peelander-Z, the Japanese Action Comic Punk Band based in NYC is located on East 2nd Street, between 2nd Avenue and Bowery. It’s evidently been up since February, but the heinous weather has kept me from doing much exploring, so I just spotted it for the first time this past weekend, when the temps soared into the high 60s! Woo! This looks like some kind of Space Pig, to me. Space Pig!
