Lynda Benglis‘ work of poured latex takes painting to an extreme. Despite employing a medium, that is not itself paint, Benglis nonetheless draws attention to paint’s essential, primary properties: color and liquidity. To make Contraband (1969), the artist created, mixtures of powdered pigment and latex in 5-gallon cans that she then poured and let run on the floor with minimal intervention. You are probably not surprised to hear me admit that my friends are always sending me photos of pink things, from every walk of life imaginable, to include in a Pink Thing of The Day post. This kind gesture is always inspiring, and it is very much appreciated that they think of me when they see a Pink Thing. But very often, that same thing has already been on the blog. And in other cases, I politely decline to write a post bout that pink thing, because I like to feature Pink Things which I actually see and photograph while I am out having an ass-kicking life. I feel that this keeps the blog more ‘authentic.’

Video Clip of The Week: “Mistake” by Honduras

Hey, do you like the late ’70s Punk Rock? I sure do. Even before I read a single word about this band, Honduras, I listened to their great tune, “Mistake,” and was so cheered by the song’s seamless infusion of subtle yet tangible influences of early Red Kross (yes, I just typed that) and The Buzzcocks. Oh boy, who even does that anymore? Answer: No one. No one does it.

Lynda Benglis Sculptures at the New Museum


Contraband

The Linda Benglis retrospective opened at the New Museum back in February, but I just got around to seeing it this past weekend. I’m so glad I can give everyone a head’s up in time to see this exhibit, because it is fantastic. This current exhibition is the artist’s first retrospective in twenty years – and the first one ever in New York.
