Rob Pruitt’s really awesome Andy Warhol Monument statue has been up at the intersection of 17th Street and Broadway since March of this year. The statue stands just a few yards from one of two former addresses of Warhol’s (in)famous Factory Studio. During the time I’ve lived in NYC (23 or so years) that same location has housed two nightclubs (Area and the short-lived Palace De Beaute), a porn shop and a Petco, which is what it is now. You can visit the statue, and marvel at its shininess, until they take it down on October 2, 2011.
Artist Sarah Knouse created this fantastically surreal mixed media Flamingo Sculpture out of plastic, resin and wood. I think it looks amazing and tells such a story just by the way the materials create a dripping, swamp-like effect. Genius is a word whose depth of meaning generally takes too long to talk about. It’s a heavy word, and the current exhibit of paintings and sculptures by Nir Hod at NYC’s Paul Kasmin Gallery, entitled Genius, is equally heavy. The Genius exhibit includes over 50 paintings and several sculptures created over a span of two years. There are times when it’s very easy for me to speak about and describe the art I’ve seen, and other times when I feel it’s best to just let the art do the talking. The latter is how I feel after seeing David Altmejd’s latest exhibit, currently at the Andrea Rosen Gallery in Chelsea.
