Smart Home Climate: Integrating Comfort and Efficiency

Smart home climate control brings thermostats, sensors, window treatments, and HVAC equipment into one coordinated system. Instead of maintaining the same temperature everywhere, your home can respond to room use, sunlight, and daily schedules. The result feels more natural: bedrooms stay comfortable overnight, empty spaces use less energy, and the living room cools down before everyone gathers. A well-designed setup can also reveal temperature differences or equipment behavior that deserves attention.

Beyond the Smart Thermostat

A smart thermostat provides scheduling and remote access, but it measures conditions in only one location. If that device sits in a cool hallway, it may keep the system running while sunny rooms become uncomfortable. Wireless room sensors give the thermostat a clearer picture by measuring temperature and, in some cases, occupancy.

What if you could actually see what was going on inside someone’s head? Erwin Wurm offers his own wonderfully strange answer with It’s Not Me, It’s Not You (Mind Bubbles), a 2025 sculpture that was part of the artist’s Double Dream exhibit at Lehmann Maupin.

To me, the sculpture looks like a character from some surreal cartoon: A cloud head / body perched atop pair of extremely long, skinny legs that bend awkwardly beneath the enormous, amorphous form. The entire figure is rendered in a soft, dreamy pale blue  right down to its little lace-up boots.

Jeff Zimmerman’s Bubble Cluster with Spikes is a distinctive illuminated sculpture that showcases his expertise in hand-blown glass artistry. This statement lighting piece for your home, created in 2023,  features a cluster of hand-blown glass bubbles interspersed with spike-like protrusions, creating a dynamic and organic form. The sculpture is mounted on a brass structure, adding to its aesthetic appeal. To me, it resembles fluffy kernels of popcorn bursting into the air or a billowing cloud crackling with electric blue lightning. Hey, remember when I found that Pink Staircase at an Asian Department Store called Teso Life, and I wished there was one in my neighborhood? Well, guess what? There is! I found this impossibly adorable, Smiling Pink Cloud Kitchen Sponge at a Teso Life that I only just discovered hiding on St. Marks Place in the Village. Fuckin’ A!

Instagram Photo of The Week: Cloud in a Glass

Over the Labor Day weekend, I snapped this photo while sitting on the deck of my friend’s Hamptons Beach House, just as the sun was setting. This was more about capturing a Friday-evening-moment of relaxing with a glass of wine than making art, but what was unexpected is how a cloud’s reflection is seen in the remaining wine in my glass. Cloud in a glass.
