On a cold October day, a young Victorian boy found a giant hand in the woods. A few of the elderly locals recognized the strange relic and told the boy a story about its unusual origins. About 100 years earlier, a farmer in the village woke up to discover he had been cursed with what was described as “troll hands.” It was quite unbelievable.

Maybe you missed the initial wave of press announcing Sea Idylls, Carole A. Feuerman’s hyper-realist sculptures of swimmers and acrobats installed on the Park Avenue Malls way back in April, because you were too busy paying attention to other stuff. Yes indeed, I am no fan of Vladimir Putin, and for that reason I take great delight in presenting to you Pink Putin (2018) from artist Scott Scheidly — whose work is just fantastic — because Putin would no doubt hate it very much.

Modern Art Monday Presents: Kay Kurt, Hallelujah
Kay Kurt (b. 1944) is a New Realist painter of large-scale confections. Her candies lay the foundation of her compositions, structuring her canvases abstractly, and freeing her to meditate on content. As Richard Hamilton, Robert Watts and Claes Oldenburg also used candies as subject matter — and she often enlarges the scale tenfold, like a billboard — Kurt’s work became associated with Pop Art early on. The scale of the Pop Art movement opened Kurt’s eyes to the possibility of a new vision based on objects instead of landscape.

Sleepwalker on The High Line
On my way to a Press Preview at the Whitney Museum last week, I decided to take the scenic route; walking along the High Line from 14th Street to Gansevoort Street. Because why not. As I hit the top of the stairs, I was met with this somewhat disquieting vision.
