Glass artist Toots Zynsky (b. 1951) has taken the idea of the Venetian latticini (glass threads used for decorative effect) to its logical extreme. She had a machine developed to draw glass threads to her own specifications in order to use them as a painter uses tubes of color. While smoking Banana Peels isn’t really a thing, you can smoke this Banana Pipe that has appeal, if you choose. A perfect addition to your collection, or as a gift for an herb-loving friend who also digs bananas, this artsy fruit-shaped pipe of borosilicate glass is from Flower by Edie Parker (aka Weedie Parker), best known for their modern designs inspired by vintage lucite hand bags.

Kelly Akashi’s Triple Helix (2020) evokes relationships among bodies across time, history, and memory.  Akashi imagines the biomorphic glass sculptures — inspired by the simple contours of figural, pre-Hispanic ceramics — as ancestral female bodies tethered by a snaking coil of rope.
When the quartz bell suspended overhead is chimed, it emits a low-pitched tone that Akashi intends “to be felt in the deepest part of your body.” The combinatin of sound, vibrations, and blown glass encourages a moment of reverent self-awareness.

François Arnal (1924 – 2012) was a multidisciplinary French artist who was primarily known as a painter and sculptor. In 1968 he set up Atelier A (Workshop A) to publicize the works of furniture designers. I recently popped into art furniture gallery Demisch Denant on  West 12th Street and was thrilled to find that they had two of Arnal’s most iconic pieces on display! Let’s take a closer look.
